The Taliban establishes an Islamic State in Pakistans North Waziristan Province

Syed Saleem Shahzad at the Asia Times Online states that the Taliban have created a stronghold in the Pakistani tribal area of Waziristan and have declared it to be under Shairah Law. It is my belief that opponents to the “War On Terror” who repeatedly cite the failure to capture Osama Bin Laden as an indication of failure for the whole effort are without a clue as to the magnitude of the problem at hand.

These area’s are really without any national governmental influence and are typically primitive to the point of being in the stone ages. Were it not for the presence of relatively modern small arm weapons you couldnt distinguish the scene from the same area a hundred years ago.

“By taking control of virtually all of Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal area on the border with Afghanistan, the Taliban have gained a significant base from which to wage their resistance against US-led forces in Afghanistan. At the same time, the development solidifies the anti-US resistance groups in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, which will now fight under a single strategy.

The Taliban recently declared the establishment of an “Islamic state” in North Waziristan, and they now, through the brutal elimination of the criminal elements who previously held sway, in effect rule in the rugged territory. ”

Read the whole article it is a rare glimpse into this area that the main stream media often over look.

  1. I’m actually quite surprised. There’s enough of the Taliban to establish a state? The situation is far worse than I expected.

Although, in one way, this is no surprise. The Pakistani side has been uncooperative, including the government, which cannot be cooperative even if it wants to: the government has always had a tenuous, if any, influence in this region.

The situation just keeps getting worse, it seems.

  2. I was suprised myself actually, I wouldve suspected the Taliban wouldve been in hiding in all of those ares by now. Especially considering the fact that the CIA seems to be watching these areas closely. They are still being actively hunted as was evidenced by the Predator drone/hellfire missle strike on Taliban figures a couple of weeks ago.

The article itself seems to be written from a nautral standpoint so I don’t readliy suspect the author of fabricating it. I would certainly like to acquire a copy of the video he’s referencing for analysis though.

  3. On further reflection, I don’t think I would go so far as to call it a “state” as much as an area of influence. According to the author they slaughtered the local criminal gang that most everyone was afraid of and just took over.
