IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei Recommends the West Concede to Iran

I was considering a nice long rant regarding the failure “Mohamed ElBaradei’s” recommendation that western nations allow Iran to have a Nuclear capabilitiy but Patrick at Clarity & Resolve has already covered it.

I will add that the Iranians must never be allowed to enrich unranium with the blessing of the UN or any Western nation (especially one with a permenant Security Council seat (cough*Russia*cough). The Iranians will develope a Nuclear weapon soon enough and the West needs to be able to respond to that threat decisively without any of the stalling that typically occurs at the UN.

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is quite mad, there will be war with Iran in the near future if they continue to press this issue.

I fear there will be war, nuke or no nuke. With a nuke, sooner than later. Without one, later than sooner. At some point the instability Iran contributes to the Middle East (and, thereby, to the international state system) has to be dealt with. We did away with Iraq, now we’ll have to deal with Iran. The good thing about Iran is that is has a pseudo-democratic system already in place. Khatami’s election (and reelection) showed it can work. We just need to remove the unelected “guardians” of the Republic, who put an end to any reformist nonsense.

I agree entirely that Iran must not get the Bomb with the West’s blessing. How likely do you think it will be that despite everything Russia will support a nuke-equipped Iran?

I think the Russian Government, who are no friends of the US, will support the Iranians heavily right up until the shooting starts and then they will protest at the UN and try and save thier damaged reputation. Russia has a major axe to grind with the USA, we drove them into bankruptcy and caused the collapse of thier empire remember? Comrade Putin was (is?) a KGB Lt Colonel, as much as I respect the Russians for thier tenacity they Russian State is still a formidable enemy and should be regarded with caution. They certainly have the desire to spread thier influence and power among the lesser (industrially) developed states. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that many of the smaller former Soviet republics are allied with the USA… they know “which side the bread is buttered on” so to speak.
