Veterans Day, 11 November 2006

Thank you to all who served.

“It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.”
Father Denis Edward O’Brien, USMC

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

“Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?”

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can’t always be a saint.

I’ve had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I’ve been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I’ve wept unmanly tears.

I know I don’t deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.”

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

“Step forward now, you soldier,
You’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets,
You’ve done your time in Hell.”

To “Susan/Peace For All” (or whatever you are calling yourself today),

First off it takes some guts to copy/paste a long rant praising the “Iraqi resistance” into a thread honoring our Armed Forces personnel on Veterans Day, I hope you enjoyed it and the result of doing so.

Secondly, It is in very bad to form to use “sock puppetry” in an attempt to lend credibility to your posts. “Susan” and “Peace for all” are the same person, pick something and stick with it if you wish to comment.

Additionally, I would rather not have off the wall trolls/rants posted 3 minutes apart in the comments as you have been doing, if you have a well thought out argument to post please do so, the copy/paste hit-and-run’s don’t add anything to the discussion.

I believe in “freedom of speech” but not “freedom of speech without accountability”.

As all of your comments thus far have contained one or more of the items listed above consider yourself moderated.
